Objectives The European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer found that prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening reduced prostate cancer mortality, however the costs and harms from screening may outweigh any mortality reduction. Compared with screening using the PSA test alone, using the Stockholm3 Model (S3M) as a reflex test for PSA ≥ 1 ng/mL has the same sensitivity for
Kim Irwin. (310) 794-2262. kirwin@mednet.ucla.edu. A new test for prostate cancer that measures levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as well as six specific antibodies found in the blood of men with the disease is more sensitive and more specific than the conventional PSA test used today, according to a study by researchers at UCLA's
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a highly sensitive serum biomarker that has changed the management of prostate cancer over the past 20 years by allowing clinicians to detect prostate cancer earlier. However, PSA testing is not perfect, as indicated by the US Preventive Services Task Force's recent recommendation against using it for routine prostate cancer screening.
In the new test, sensitivity -- the percentage of men with prostate cancer who were correctly identified as having a malignancy -- was 79 percent compared to the 52 percent found in PSA testing.
The current study revealed that two out of three men with a positive screening MRI had PSA levels lower than 3.0 ng/mL. These findings indicate that MRI can be used to screen for prostate cancer
An expert panel produced these recommendations based on a linked systematic review.1 The review was triggered by a large scale, cluster randomised trial on PSA screening in men without a previous diagnosis of prostate cancer published in 2018 (box 1).2 It found no difference between one-time PSA screening and standard practice in prostate cancer
Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a blood test used by many doctors to screen for prostate cancer. If you've had your PSA level checked, you may have been told that your results were "normal" or "abnormal." However, some men would like to know more about what their PSA level means.
Discovered in 1979, PSA assays became incorporated into clinical use in the late 1980s at detection thresholds of 0.2 to 0.6 ng/mL [2-4]. In postoperative setting a detectable level identifies the presence of prostate cancer, but at such low disease burdens that imaging cannot reliably locate the source.
